The small coffee shop felt suddenly stifling to Michael. He rose abruptly from his table, knocking over the chair. He felt like he couldn’t breathe. He'd been excitedly reading the news article detailing the plagiarism charges against his literary hero, Charles Beaumont. He could not collect himself.

He strode outside, needing the fresh air. The world, previously bright, now seemed washed in a dull grey. He gripped the edge of the awning, knuckles white. The accusations were undeniable.

He’d spent years dissecting Beaumont’s novels, admiring his storytelling. He’d aspired to be like him. The thought now made him nauseous. He kicked at a loose stone. He felt as if something valuable had been snatched from him.
